An AI answer with citations is easier to inspect than an unsupported answer, but citations do not guarantee correctness. A link may be relevant to the topic without supporting the sentence attached to it.
Compare AI-assisted search through source quality, claim support and handling of uncertainty rather than invented accuracy percentages.
Distinguish retrieval from an answer
Perplexity's Search API returns ranked web results and supports search controls. That is distinct from a complete generated-answer workflow.
Google's Search grounding guide describes connecting Gemini to web content and providing citations. The API feature should not be conflated with every consumer Google Search or Gemini experience.
These documented interfaces do not establish which private indexes a service uses internally or guarantee that every newly published page is available within seconds.
Test citations at the claim level
Choose questions with checkable primary sources. For a software release, ask for the release date, a specific API change and a known limitation. Save the answer, query time and cited pages.
For each material claim, determine whether the cited page supports it, contradicts it or merely discusses the same topic. Check the date and product version. An older release note may be accurate but irrelevant to the current API.
Include a question whose answer is unavailable. A useful system should make that limitation clear rather than attach a plausible citation to an invented fact.
Separate freshness from response speed
A quick answer can use stale evidence. Record when the underlying event happened, when the source was published and when the answer was produced.
For rapidly changing information, verify the primary source directly. Do not treat model confidence or a “live search” label as a substitute for that check.
What this means for a website
Google's AI features guidance says ordinary SEO practices remain relevant and that no additional special optimization is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Publish useful, accurate pages with clear authorship, accessible content, working links and consistent metadata. Structured presentation can help readers understand the material, but a table, a preferred-source button or a new label for optimization cannot guarantee citation or ranking.
Choose a workflow from evidence
For research, keep a short claim-to-source record and open important citations. For an application, preserve source links and expose uncertainty in the interface.
The strongest comparison is task-specific: which service found suitable evidence and represented it faithfully under recorded conditions? Without that test, neither a universal winner nor a precise citation-accuracy claim is justified.
