Speech Synthesis Models: Comparing Voice Quality and Interaction Requirements

Evaluate ElevenLabs and OpenAI speech synthesis using pronunciation, streaming, interruption and voice controls instead of unsupported naturalness scores.

Speech Synthesis Models: Comparing Voice Quality and Interaction Requirements

A convincing demo voice does not establish that a speech system will work well in a product. A navigation instruction, narrated article and live support conversation have different requirements for pronunciation, pacing and interruption.

This comparison uses documented product capabilities and proposes a test method. No listening study or latency measurement was performed for this article.

Compare the exact product

ElevenLabs' model catalog distinguishes Eleven v3, Multilingual v2, Flash v2.5 and Eleven v3 Conversational. The Conversational documentation describes context-sensitive delivery within its agents system. Do not treat standard v3 and the conversational stack as interchangeable endpoints.

OpenAI's speech guide documents gpt-4o-mini-tts, including instructions for aspects of delivery and streamed output. It also requires a clear disclosure that the voice is AI-generated. Those are documented features, not evidence that one provider sounds better for every language or voice.

Build a pronunciation test set

Use phrases from the intended product: names, dates, abbreviations, currency, technical terms and mixed-language sentences. Include ambiguous text such as “03/04” and decide how the application should resolve it before synthesis.

For each sample, record the model, voice, settings and exact input. Have reviewers assess intelligibility, incorrect words, unwanted pauses and whether the tone fits the message. Keep pronunciation errors separate from subjective preference.

For an article reader, consistency across paragraphs may matter more than the most dramatic delivery of a single sentence. For a warning message, clarity should take precedence over expressiveness.

Measure the whole conversation

Time to first audio is only one interval. A voice assistant also waits for the user to finish, obtains an answer, buffers audio and plays it on the device. Measure that full path under the intended network conditions.

Test cancellation deliberately. If the user interrupts, the product should stop queued playback and prevent an obsolete answer from restarting. Generating another response without clearing the previous audio can make a fast model feel unusable.

Keep control in the application

Provide text alongside audio where appropriate, a visible stop control and a route to repeat or correct an answer. Avoid autoplay that obscures page content or competes with assistive technology.

Use voices with the necessary permission and review the provider's applicable terms for the intended use. Do not infer consent from possession of a short recording. A useful evaluation produces a defensible voice choice for one workflow, not an unsupported claim of human-indistinguishable speech or universal language quality.
