Supabase: PostgreSQL Access, RLS and Production Responsibilities

Evaluate the complete application path

Supabase combines PostgreSQL with application services including authentication, storage and realtime capabilities. Its fit depends on the data model, access rules and operating requirements. A useful evaluation follows one real user journey from sign-in to reading and changing authorized records.

Do not infer feature release dates from the year in an article title or treat a managed platform as proof that an application is ready for production.

RLS is part of the authorization boundary

Row Level Security can restrict which rows a database role may access. Supabase's documentation explains how policies interact with authentication and why privileged service credentials must stay out of browser code. Grants and policy definitions both matter. Row Level Security.

This illustrative policy assumes an existing public.orders table with a UUID user_id, appropriate role grants and no broader policy granting the same access:

sql
alter table public.orders enable row level security;

create policy "read own orders"
on public.orders
for select
to authenticated
using ((select auth.uid()) = user_id);

It permits the specified read behavior. It does not grant insertion, updates or deletion. It is not a complete schema migration and has not been executed against a database here.

An unauthenticated request does not have a signed-in user's identifier. Also review all applicable policies: adding a restrictive-looking policy does not necessarily narrow access if another permissive policy still grants it.

Test a boundary with more than one user

Create synthetic records for two test users. Confirm that each can read only the intended records, that unauthenticated access behaves as designed, and that API operations cannot change ownership unexpectedly.

A client-side .eq("user_id", userId) filter is useful query shaping, not a security boundary. A caller can alter a browser request. The server or database must enforce authorization independently.

Generated TypeScript types help describe the schema, but runtime payload validation and correct database policies remain necessary.

Authentication includes lifecycle work

Evaluate sign-in, expiry, recovery, logout and revoked access. The older Supabase Auth UI repository is archived and states that the Supabase team stopped maintaining it in February 2024. It should not be presented as the default maintained shortcut for a new application. Auth UI repository status.

Choose the current documented integration for the application's framework and review how sessions are handled on the server and in the browser.

Realtime and retrieval need explicit setup

A subscription does not replace a durable initial query or a reconnection strategy. Test what the user sees after network loss and how the interface reconciles missed or duplicate changes.

For vector retrieval, an RPC such as match_documents must actually exist with a reviewed definition and access policy. A model's embedding dimensions must match the stored schema. Similarity alone does not establish that a document is relevant or authorized for the caller.

Hosted and self-hosted operations

Self-hosting changes who operates backups, upgrades, secrets and recovery. It does not automatically establish compliance or reproduce every hosted capability. Review the documented scope and operational requirements. Self-hosting guide.

Before choosing a plan or deployment, model compute, storage, egress and support needs from representative usage. Compare alternatives through the same workflow and acceptance criteria rather than an unsupported latency or cost ranking.
