Vision-Language Models: Evaluating OCR, Charts and Interface Analysis

Compare visual AI by task, preserve source evidence and combine screenshot interpretation with deterministic checks for documents and user interfaces.

Vision-Language Models: Evaluating OCR, Charts and Interface Analysis

Reading text from a receipt, interpreting a chart and diagnosing an interface are different visual tasks. A model that describes a screenshot fluently may still misread a small number or infer an interaction that the image cannot demonstrate.

This is a task-based evaluation guide, not a ranked benchmark of proprietary models.

Test document extraction at the field level

Create a set of representative documents with reviewed answers. Include rotated pages, faint text, dense tables and missing fields. Preserve page references with every extracted value.

For an invoice, evaluate supplier name, date, currency, line items and total separately. Check arithmetic using application code. A plausible narrative summary should not compensate for an incorrect amount.

If text is too small, test a higher-quality source or a crop that preserves enough context. Record preprocessing because resizing and compression can affect the evidence a model sees.

Separate chart reading from explanation

Ask for the chart's title, axes, units, series and selected values before requesting an interpretation. Include examples with a truncated axis or an unusual scale. The answer should distinguish a value visible in the chart from one estimated between ticks.

A practical acceptance rule might require exact extraction of labels and an explicit “not legible” response when a value cannot be read. The tolerance for estimated values should be chosen for the application, not inferred from how confident the answer sounds.

Use screenshots as one layer of UI evidence

A screenshot can reveal overlap, unreadable contrast or a clipped heading. It cannot by itself establish the responsible z-index rule, keyboard order, accessible name or whether a button completes its action.

Use visual analysis to identify a suspected defect, then inspect the DOM, computed styles and interaction state. Retain deterministic assertions for routes, form behavior and permission checks. Model-assisted review complements these checks.

Anthropic's vision documentation explicitly describes approximate spatial localization, possible counting errors and mistakes on low-quality images. Those limitations make verification necessary when exact coordinates or quantities matter.

Compare candidates without inventing precision

Use the same input files and a written scoring rubric. Track factual errors, omissions, unsupported inferences, latency and cost separately. Include a reviewer who can inspect the original evidence.

Store the model identifier and evaluation date with results. A score from one document set does not establish performance on handwriting, medical images or a different interface. The useful outcome is a bounded decision about a specific workflow, with a clear path for handling uncertain output.
