Two different uses of light
Photonics can move information between components, perform selected mathematical operations, or combine both roles. Those capabilities deserve separate evaluation. A faster link does not automatically accelerate a compute-bound kernel, and an optical operation still belongs to a larger system with electrical control and data conversion.
Lightmatter's Passage is a photonic interconnect platform. Its March 2025 M1000 announcement describes an active photonic interposer and aggregate optical bandwidth. That is a packaging and connectivity specification, not a measured speedup for an arbitrary training job. M1000 announcement.
Read the measurement boundary
Lightmatter's September 2025 technical article describes demonstrations of its interconnect hardware and a bidirectional, multi-wavelength fiber link. These are vendor-reported results with defined link configurations. Keep that context attached when comparing them with another product. Hardware technical overview.
A comparison should state whether bandwidth is per lane, fiber, package, accelerator or entire system. Distinguish bits from bytes and one direction from the sum of both directions. Record protocol overhead and achievable application throughput separately.
Power needs the same discipline. A quoted link energy per bit may exclude lasers, cooling, endpoint electronics or host work. Optical transmission does not imply a heat-free machine.
Optical arithmetic is a separate integration problem
Optalysys currently describes its technology as programmable photonic Compute-in-Transit, performing operations within the data path. This is its stated architectural direction; the public positioning alone does not establish a drop-in accelerator for every model or a measured deployment in this portfolio. Optalysys technology overview.
When considering optical computation, ask which operations and numeric representations are supported. Establish the cost of getting data into the optical path, reading the result, correcting errors and executing unsupported operations elsewhere. An attractive core operation can lose its advantage if the surrounding pipeline dominates.
Evaluate an application before an upgrade
For a distributed training workload, first profile time spent computing, communicating and waiting for other workers. Record message sizes, collective operations and overlap with computation. A workload stalled by storage or uneven batches may not benefit much from a faster accelerator interconnect.
Consider a hypothetical job spending 70% of its time in computation and 30% in communication that cannot overlap. Even halving the communication time changes total time from 100 units to 85: about a 1.18-fold speedup. That arithmetic is an illustration, not a claim about any photonic product.
A procurement worksheet
Request the supported topology, endpoint compatibility, software dependencies, serviceability, error behavior and environmental requirements. Then agree on a representative workload and an end-to-end acceptance test.
Measure elapsed job time, throughput at the required accuracy, total system energy and recovery from a failed link. Retain the configuration and raw measurements. The useful outcome is evidence that the complete system solves a bottleneck, rather than a table of impressive numbers drawn from incompatible specifications.
